Molluscum contagiosum

Water warts.

Cause

Virus - Pox virus.

Distribution

Worldwide.

Transmission

  • Sexual - Molluscum contagiosum affecting the genital area is usually acquired sexually.
  • Non-sexual - Molluscum contagiosum affecting other areas is not sexually acquired and may occur in children.

Incubation

3 weeks to several months.

Symptoms

Pearly white pimple like bumps with depressed centres on the external genitals.

Diagnosis

Physical examination.

Treatment

  • Pricked with a sharpened orange stickdipped in phenol or trichloroacetic acid.
  • Crushed with forceps.
  • Electrocauterisation (burning).
  • Liquid nitrogen application.

Complications

No long term effects

Comments

Several treatments may be required before complete cure can be achieved.
