Free radical theory of ageing
Free radicals are unstable molecules
with an extra electron that go around stealing electrons from
wherever they can, causing oxidative damage to cell membranes,
DNA (deoxyribonucliec acid) and other proteins. Our body's metabolic
processes, tobacco smoke, pollution and ultraviolet light generates
free radicals. When cells lose electrons, they become oxidized;
this is termed oxidative damage. The term, oxidative stress refers
to an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the
respective anti-oxidant defences of the body.
Some of the diseases that might be caused
by free radicals include:
- Alzheimer's disease
- CancerHeart disease
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Diabetes
- Macular degeneration of the retina
and cataracts
- Skin ageing and wrinkling
